I’ve dabbled my hand in a photoshoot here and there, and quite frankly, I love it. Always wanted to be a model. Since, I started my campaign with photographer Jetro Nicolas, there’s been a growth in my level of comfort with the camera and with my person. How you feel about yourself resonates with how fluid you are during a shoot. We pray each time before shooting, asking for God’s calm and will all throughout. And, it turns out greatly every time.
Now, I’m not well known… yet. But, I have worked with models before, picking their brains on their experience in the industry. From an interview I had with Society Row model, Nina Mackey, (and several seasons of watching America’s Next Top Model), I discovered modeling takes work! It is not simply a profession of taking “pretty” pictures. There is more to this field than meets the eye, and Nina is filling us in on the details.
In the most humblest of ways, Nina mentions “I am under construction,” during our candid conversation on the way to her shoot with photographer Kat Gorbanov in DUMBO Brooklyn. “I am pretty much learning as I go because no one [around me] has done this before. So, I look to people I admire and try to pose like them or make it look how it was done in the video.”
Nina’s philosophy is to “surround yourself with what your version of success looks like.” So many gems from this self-proclaimed “beginner/intermediate” model. Her wisdom alone speaks far beyond her years, which brings us to our next point:
The 4 Fundamentals for Developing Your Modeling Career
- Have confidence, explains Nina, who’s seen people get turned down from jobs because of their timidity.
- Flexibility is also key. You can be prepared for a shoot to go one way and discover the vision totally changed once you arrive on set. With that said…
- Be professional. Working well with others is useful across all professional backgrounds.
- Be honest with who you are. All models do not look the same. Work with what you’ve got.
The model goes on to giving the deets on her inspiration. “I follow Joan Small, Naomi [Campbell] and Tyra back in the day,” reveals Nina, because she somewhat looks like them. According to Nina, it makes sense to take cues from models she resembles. Gigi Hadid may be one of her inspirations. However, since their looks are different, Hadid can get booked for jobs that Nina won’t get and vice versa. That is simply the reality. The takeaway is Nina is learning, growing and functioning in her own lane-a value for us all.
Until next time…
